Tampa Hosting Gun Buyback Program

Alex Borland, Wikipedia Commons

As a part of a summer initiative, the City of Tampa is hosting an anonymous gun buyback event next week aiming to curb gun violence.

Any Hillsborough County resident can bring in their handguns, rifles and shotguns in exchange for $50 cash per weapon, no questions asked.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said he meets children all over the city that need to be protected.

"I met three of them before I came in here. A young Dejanay, young Daniel, and young Berry. They deserve the same opportunities that my two little girls on Davies Islands have," he said, "and it shouldn't matter whether you live in East Tampa or Sulphur Springs or whether you play in Woodlands Terrace Park or whether you play in Jackson Heights, they deserve a safe environment."
The Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation is donating $50,000 towards the buyback program. The event will take place June 27th at River Tower Park on 401 East Bird St from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
