In a momentous victory over former state Rep. Mike Beltran, Rep. Kathy Castor held her congressional seat representing District 14, which was redrawn by the Florida Legislature this year.
With 51% of the vote, Democrat U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor held her 20-year congressional seat for District 14 over Republican former state Rep. Mike Beltran, who calls himself “Maga Mike.”
It’s a momentous win in one of four congressional districts made more favorable for GOP candidates since Florida’s Republican-controlled Legislature approved a new map this year, as the Florida Phoenix reports.
At her watch party Tuesday night at the Tampa Bay History Center, Castor opened the mic verklempt, thanking constituents who voted for her, as well as those who wanted to but couldn’t due to redrawn district lines she called “egregious gerrymandering.”

“I think we learned that … where they try to rig the game and take away your voice, contrary to the will of Floridians, Democrats, Republicans and Independents … it didn’t work here,” the Tampa congresswoman said. “It, just, it didn’t work here.”
Florida’s 14th Congressional District, representing Tampa and parts of Hillsborough County, was shifted to absorb conservative-leaning voters in the southern and eastern parts of the county.
David Osborne cast his ballot Tuesday morning at the C. Blythe Andrews Library in East Tampa — a majority-Black Democratic precinct that used to fall within District 14.
He said he’s voted for Castor in the past but she wasn’t on his ballot this time.
“I don't recall seeing her name on there, and I don't recall who I did see," he said.
The redrawn district also became a hotspot for high-dollar political spending.
Leaving the polls at Tampa's Christ the King Catholic Church at lunchtime, independent voter Shane Lisinski said Beltran, who ultimately won his vote, came across the most during his media usage.
“Beltran, that's like the one name I know persistently,” Lisinski said. “Like, I've heard him come through my TV, through YouTube, all over the place.”
As WFLA reports, in a concession interview, Beltran said, “This wasn’t the result we were looking for, but it certainly wasn’t for a lack of effort, lack of door-knocking, lack of fundraising or anything like that; this was obviously not a good night for us.”

At Castor’s watch party, Josh Bunker said he was eager to vote for her for the first time.
A resident of Bloomingdale, an unincorporated part of East Hillsborough — and now newly included in District 14 — Bunker is a Republican who said Castor’s track record in the Tampa Bay region won his vote.
Castor said on Tuesday night that she’s ready to get back to work.
In her next term, she promised to make cost of living her top priority, as well as opposing government corruption in D.C. and Tallahassee and reducing the amount of special interest dollars influencing political campaigns, noting the millions she said Beltran spent to defeat her.
“Big tech CEOs, AI tech bros, polluters. They spent $25 million,” Castor said. “Meanwhile, we had 16,000 individual supporters contribute to this campaign.”
