Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny stops by NPR's Washington studios for an hour of live music and talks with John Ydstie and callers about his approach to songwriting.
Metheny's new album refers to his past but continues to break new ground. The Way Up consists of a single, long-form piece, divided into four sections. It's a reaction, he says, to a world where things are getting shorter, dumber, less interesting, less detailed and more predictable.
