Metallica launches 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' competition for marching bands

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Michel Martin. You might not think your local college or high school marching band performance as the most obvious place to hear some headbangers, but the iconic heavy metal band Metallica begs to differ. They've launched a competition they're calling "For Whom The Band Tolls!" Hundreds of colleges and high schools are competing for tens of thousands of dollars in prizes. One of the finalists is Dobyns-Bennett High School in Tennessee. That's who's playing now. And yeah, the money's good, but heavy metal is immortal. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
