USF Gets Grants and Awards But Still Doesn't Loosen the Wallet

University of South Florida

University of South Florida president Judy Genshaft gave her fall address today, and she described a university that's bringing more money in through grants and research, but having to tighten its belt anyway.

President Genshaft announced USF exceeded the $400 million mark in total research earnings last academic year.

But Genshaft also talked about the hiring and spending freeze she recently put in place for the Tampa campus.

"You know I've often characterized the USF system as conservative with its finances but creative with its ideas and innovations. We need these ideas even more today," she said.

The University of South Florida has to absorb a $37 million cut from the last legislative session.

In total, Florida public universities had to absorb a $300 million decrease this year.
