Affirmative Action & Immigration

Linda visited the California delegation this morning to talk with some of the delegates about immigration issues and affirmative action. California Governor Pete Wilson signed an executive order yesterday directing all state agencies and state supported colleges to halt benefits to illegal immigrants. These delegates said they dislike illegal border crossing, but those who are already in this country and in need must have services provided to them, especially children. They say the Republicans are playing on people's fears with 30-second sound bytes. Many of these delegates are minority members, and say that affirmative action is a opportunity, not a quota system -- it's an open door to allow people to prove themselves.
