Consent Rules

NPR's Richard Harris reports that the FDA will now allow experimental procedures to be used in life-threatening situations where neither the individual nor a member of the family is able to give informed consent. Communities and hospitals will set the standards for when such decisions will be made. It may promote advances in emergency care, but experts say monitoring for abuse is crucial.
