Slate's Explainer: Erasing Computer Evidence

A former publisher of the New York City daily newspaper Newsday was recently indicted for possessing child pornography. He also allegedly tried to erase evidence from his computer using a program called Evidence Eliminator. Slate senior editor Andy Bowers explains the technical limits of software designed to erase data from computers.
