Governor Rick Scott has signed a bill into law that creates tougher penalties for people using gas skimmers.
While typically skimmers are associated with gas stations, they can be placed on any reader used to scan credit cards. And Florida Retail Federation General Counsel Samantha Padgett says they’re used to steal people’s personal information.
“We’re concerned about the safety of their information and often it is at our locations, whether a gas station, a restaurant or others where they can fall victim to use these devices for nefarious purposes,” Padgett said.
The new law cracking down on the devices goes into effect October 1.
