AP Award Entry Radio Series: Off the Base

Off the Base is a weekly news series broadcast by WUSF 89.7 News highlighting the lives and issues of veterans, active-duty personnel and their families in our community.

March 29, 2013 - Special Forces are considered the military’s elite - the Rangers, Green Berets, and Navy SEALS among others.  And the elite of the elite are the Special Forces who have been awarded the Medal of Honor. Two of them were recognized this week as their names were added to the Special Operations Memorial Wall of Honor at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. (Partial story)

June 28, 2013 - Over the next five years, more than one million men and women will leave the military and re-enter civilian life.  For some, that is not an easy transition. But there’s a program crafted and led by student veterans to help with the adjustment. (Full story)

September 27, 2013 - The U.S. military is downsizing. The war in Iraq is over, and combat troops are due out of Afghanistan by the end of next year. That means more than 1 million service members will be entering the civilian workforce in the coming years. That’s why two veterans are on a mission to help employers and the community in general separate fact from fiction when it comes to post-traumatic stress disorder. (Partial story)

June 21, 2013 - During the week of July 13th, Tampa will show some love to a group of amateur athletes who will arrive from around the nation for the 33rd Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games. (Partial story)

September 15, 2013 - The Veterans Crisis Line was established six years ago to try and slow the flood of veteran suicides. A new HBO documentary, Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1, takes us past the cubicles and down the hallways at the Veterans Crisis Line Center based in Canandaigua, N.Y. (Full story)
