Police say one of the ways Dwayne White duped elderly victims in Tampa was by telling them they had currency he needed to inspect. The extensive lies didn't stop there, according to the Tampa Police Department.
"He was using the ruse that he was a police officer and that there was a possibility that their money was actually counterfeit in some of the cases," Sgt. Pat Kennedy said. "And in other cases that it was derived from illegal activities and that he needed to inspect it and upon inspecting it, he informed them that it was definitely gonna be bad money and that he was going to be taking it."
Kennedy says White took $1,300 from a 91-year-old woman. And another of his Tampa victims is blind. He said all of White's Tampa victims were women on fixed incomes over the age of 70.
White apparently never stayed put. He operated throughout the Eastern seaboard.
Now 52-year-old Dwayne White is in the custody of U.S. Marshals. They caught up with him in Georgia.
Tampa Police are hoping to make a federal case of this so White will serve more time for his crimes.
