The  National Weather Service storm prediction center has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for portions of the Tampa Bay area until 5 p.m. today.

The NWS says a line of strong thunderstorms over the eastern gulf of Mexico will spread eastward across the watch area through the early afternoon.

The threats include damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, or a possible tornado.

The area of concern stretches from  10 miles northeast  of Ocala, to 60 miles south of Avon Park in Highlands County.
