Across the United States, people and communities are commemorating the 18th anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks with tributes, services, and other events.
Listed below are a few of the memorials that are taking place across the Tampa Bay area.
Hillsborough
Wednesday: Patriot Day: 9/11 Remembrance Event at Veterans Memorial Park and Museum, Tampa, 9 a.m.
The Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Hillsborough County Consumer & Veterans Services, and The Veterans Council of Hillsborough County invite all for a day of remembrance for those lives lost on 9/11. Admission is free.
Pinellas
Wednesday:Patriot Day Memorial Breakfast at The Historic Coliseum, St. Petersburg, 7 – 9 a.m.
The 7thAnnual Patriot Day Memorial Breakfast will be held at the Historic St. Petersburg Coliseum. Guest speaker Gregory J. Mertz will recount his story of search and rescue at Ground Zero.
Wednesday: 9/11 Patriot Day of Remembrance Ceremony, Madeira Beach, 8:30 – 10 a.m.
Hosted by American Legion Post 273, this event will have current and past Honor Guard members participating in the ceremony. The event begins on Blind Pass Road in Madeira Beach.
Wednesday: 9/11 Memorial Service at Curlew Hills Memory Garden, Palm Harbor, 10 a.m.
The Curlew Hills Memory Garden will host their annual 9/11 memorial service honoring those who died on 9/11. The event will be hosted by FOX 13’s Mark Wilson, and will include a helicopter flyover, as well as other guest speakers.
Pasco
Saturday: 9/11 Memorial Mile and Memorial Unveiling, Tampa Premium Outlets, Lutz, 7:30 – 10 a.m.
The Tampa Premium Outlets will unveil a 30-foot-long by 10-foot high vinyl wrap structure, honoring the heroes from the 9/11 attacks and commemorating future community heroes. The event will begin with a Memorial Mile run beginning at 7:30 a.m. followed by the unveiling of the memorial in the food court at 8:46 a.m.
Wednesday: Annual 9/11 Memorial in Sims Park, New Port Richey, 7 p.m.
The annual memorial will host speaker Anne Koster, a survivor of the September 11thattacks who was working on the 81stfloor of the North tower when the first plane struck.
Sarasota
Wednesday: 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, USF Sarasota-Manatee, 8:20 a.m.
The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee will host a remembrance event for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, paying tribute to survivors, first responders and members of the military. The special ceremony will be held in the campus courtyard and will feature 2,977 flags planted on the green, one for each victim. The event is free and open to the public.
Wednesday: 7th Annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony in Patriots Park, Venice, 10 a.m.
The 7thAnnual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will be held in Patriots Park. There will be a presentation of colors and patriotic music by the Lion Rampant Pipe and Drum of Bradenton. The event will also have guest speakers and a bell ringing for 9/11 victims and fallen heroes, followed by the playing of taps and "Amazing Grace" to cap off the memorial.
Polk
Wednesday: Honoring our Heroes – Remembering the Day 2019, Central Park, Downtown Winter Haven, 6:30 p.m.
The annual Honoring our Heroes – Remembering the Day will feature a Freedom Walk to honor all veterans, law enforcement and first responders of 9/11. It will be followed by a service to pay tribute to heroes in Polk County, and culminate with a sunset candlelight service to honor the lives that were lost.
Charlotte
Wednesday: Patriot Day Event, Military Heritage Museum, Punta Gorda, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Military Heritage Museum will host an all-day commemorative event, paying special tribute to all of the first responders who risked their lives on 9/11. The ceremony will include an account from a survivor from one of the Twin Towers, and speeches from leaders of local police, fire and sheriff departments.
