Bush to Seek $87 Billion for Iraq
In a speech to the nation, President Bush says Iraq is now "the central front" in the U.S. war on terrorism -- and that he "will spend what is necessary" to win the war. He says he will ask Congress for $87 billion to support the effort in the coming year. He urges U.S. allies to help with security in Iraq. Spain Seeks Foreign Suspects in Bombings
Spanish police detain an Algerian in connection with last week's deadly terrorist bombings in Madrid. Police believe they have identified five Moroccans who took part in the attacks, but say other foreigners may have been involved. Officials are still investigating a possible link to al Qaeda. Chalabi Seeks Grants for Rebuilding Iraq
Ahmed Chalabi, a member and former head of Iraq's governing council, visits Washington, D.C., to request money in the form of grants -- not loans -- for the reconstruction of Iraq. Despite a recent report casting doubt on evidence provided by exiled Iraqis, Chalabi reaffirms his belief that weapons of mass destruction are present in Iraq. NPR's Robert Siegel speaks with Chalabi.
