Clinton/Mubarak Talks
Host Renee Montagne talks to Washington Post Reporter Howard Schneider, who's in Cairo, about the discussion President Clinton had with Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak concerning the stalled Middle East Peace process. The U.S. hopes that President Mubarak can be persuaded to get other Arab leaders to agree to leave East Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty.

President Clinton has returned to Washington after a weekend trip to Africa. NPR's Mike Shuster reports that on his way home, Mr. Clinton stopped in Cairo for a meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak about the Middle East Peace process. They met for over an hour at the Cairo airport. Before the meeting, Clinton said he thinks that all the parties understand that without the leadership and support of Egypt, they will not be able to achieve a peace settlement.
Mariel Boatlift 20th Anniversary
NPR's David Welna reports on the 20th anniversary of the Mariel Boatlift, the massive wave of immigration from Cuba to Florida in 1980. Over a five-month period, 125-thousand Cuban refugees left Cuba from the port of Mariel, and traveled to the United States in small boats. Processing the huge influx overwhelmed the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The INS task was even harder because the refugees included convicted criminals who had been released from prison and mental patients freed from institutions.
Middle East Peace Process
Host Bob Edwards talks with NPR's Linda Gradstein about the Middle East peace process. Many of the region's leaders will be attending this week's UN Millennium Summit in New York. Yesterday, Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Barak told UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan that the peace process must be resolved in a matter of weeks.
