Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was walking across Interstate 595 in Broward County when he was struck by a dump truck Saturday morning, authories said.
The Steelers and Washington Commanders, his former team, released statements extending their condolences.
The 24-year-old Haskins was a first-round draft choice of Washington in 2019 out of Ohio State.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Haskins was struck in the westbound lanes of I-595 near the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport about 7 a.m.
The driver of the dump truck waited for authorities to arrive.
According to reports, Haskins had been in Palm Beach County for workouts with some Pittsburgh teammates.
In a statement, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said:
“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins. He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time.”
Washington coach Ron Rivera said:
“Dwayne was a talented young man who had a long life ahead of him. This is a very sad time and I am honestly at a loss for words. I know I speak for the rest of our team in saying he will be sorely missed. Our entire team is sending our heartfelt condolences and thoughts and prayers to the Haskins family at this time.”
Haskins started seven games, going 2-5 as a rookie. He was 1-5 in six starts the next season for the team, then was released on Dec. 29, 2020. A few weeks later, he was signed by Pittsburgh, but did not play in the 2021 season.
