Skyway Bridge Reopens After Tanker Fire

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge spanning Tampa Bay is now open following a tanker truck fire.

Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskins said in an email that repairs to the bridge were completed overnight and all lanes were reopened early Wednesday.

The bridge spans the bay between Pinellas and Manatee counties and is part of Interstate 275, a main artery on Florida's west coast.

In previous reports, Gaskins said the tanker had been carrying nearly 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

The bridge was closed in both directions Tuesday morning after the truck's right front tire blew out and the driver lost control and collided with a barrier wall. Gaskins said the driver got out of the vehicle before it caught fire and was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
