Attorney General

Attorney General Janet Reno faces a decision this week on whether to appoint a special counsel to investigate charges of campaign finance irregularities by Reno's boss, President Clinton. She also faces a new round of criticism if she decides no special investigator is needed. Critics say Reno is beholden to Mr Clinton for her job, so she can't be objective. NPR's Chitra Ragavan reports that attorneys general often have been cronies of the presidents who appointed them, and Congress passed the laws that led to the current appointment process.
