Workshop Unites Singers and Composers

Soprano Dawn Upshaw and composer John Harbison have completed an experiment. Last May, they paired four singers with four composers to create original pieces for a workshop at Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute.

The young artists had never met before being introduced by Upshaw and Harbison, who have worked together for the last 16 years.

The participants were selected from a field of over 250 musicians to create new compositions.

Jeff Lunden follows two singer-composer teams through a five-month process of collaboration and rehearsals, culminating in a final recital, which was held last Sunday at Carnegie Hall.
