Gates Remembers 'Prince' John Hope Franklin

In an essay for the Root entitled "John Hope, the Prince Who Refused the Kingdom," Henry Louis Gates, Jr. thanks the late historian John Hope Franklin.

Franklin wrote the seminal text From Slavery to Freedom. Though Franklin objected to the segregation of 'black studies,' Gates believes the field would not exist without his work.
