Anti-gambling forces are claiming a partial victory now that the Florida Supreme Court is blocking slot machines at a Gretna pari-mutuel facility.
No Casinos president John Sowinksi says justices were right to block slot machines, even though Gadsden County voters approved them.
He says gambling policy is too far ranging to be left up to local communities.
“A decision that would be made by a small locality would trigger the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, and have far-reaching impact across the state.”
Lawmakers couldn’t agree on a deal with the Seminole Tribe of Florida known as a gambling “compact.” Sowinski is pushing an initiative that would require statewide voter approval for gambling expansion.
