AP Award Entry Radio Continuing Coverage: Veterans' Wheelchair Games

During the week of July 13, Tampa hosted close to 600 amateur athletes, their trainers and families from around the nation for the 33rd Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games. WUSF 89.7 News advanced the national event as well as providing coverage beyond the typical sports stories.

July 9, 2013 - Ten years ago, Dwayne Scheuneman was competing on the wheelchair racing circuit when the Navy veteran started wheelchair dancing and never returned to the track, until this year. Having the 33rd annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games hosted in the Tampa Bay region was too delicious of an opportunity to pass up. (The individual link)

July 18, 2013 - More than 550 wheelchair athletes are in Tampa for the 33rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games.  Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, public places have to be accessible to them. But one group of athletes from South Florida found some places are more accommodating than others. (The individual link)

July 19, 2013 - After six days of intense and sometimes grueling competition, the 33rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games came to a close Thursday night in Tampa. And like the decathlon in the Summer Olympics, “Super G” is the event considered the “top” event for the wheelchair athletes who must be invited to compete. (The individual link)
