July Opens With Two Veterans Events

BOBBIE O'BRIEN / WUSF PUBLIC MEDIA

The Vice-Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), is holding a Veterans’ Town Hall today, July 1, 2015 starting at 5:30 p.m.

The event is open to the public and will offer the audience a chance to participate.

The congressman is looking for feedback on the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act, passed last year. The act was passed to give veterans access to private medical facilities if they live more than 40 miles from a VA facility or have to wait longer than 30 days for medical care.

Now, the congressman wants to hear if the CHOICE Act is working. Bilirakis’ Veterans Town Hall is being held at the West Pasco Government Center, Suite 150, 8731 Citizens Drive, New Port Richey, FL.

Summer of Service

It’s a national initiative that relies on local participation. The idea behind the “Summer of Service” is to hire more medical staff and clinicians, sign-up 100,000 volunteers and 15,000 community partners to help at VA facilities nationwide.

The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (VAHCS) kicks off it’s first event today, July 1  in the J.C. Cobb room located on the first floor of the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center in Bay Pines, FL at 10 a.m.

A second event is set Thursday, July 2 in room 1A212 located on the first floor of the Lee County Healthcare Center, 2489 Diplomat Parkway East Cape Coral, FL at 10:00 a.m.

Each event will include a presentation and select facility tours.

Veterans and their families, congressional stakeholders, Veteran Service Organizations, other community partners and the general public are invited to attend.
