Looking ahead: The month of July in the arts

Jelly Roll's Raymond James Stadium concert with Post Malone is scheduled for July 8.

Who, and what, in arts and entertainment will soon be heading our way?

Shall we try this again?

Rap/country crossover artists Post Malone and Jelly Roll will perform July 8 at Raymond James Stadium. The show was postponed from May 29 because, according to Post Malone, he hadn’t yet finished recording his new album. He postponed six concerts, including Tampa.

All righty then.

The album, The Eternal Buzz, is reportedly a two-disc, 40-song affair. It’s not out yet, so the performer (real name Austin Post) can’t use “The Big Ass Stadium Tour 2” as a vehicle to sell records. Which is the reason major artists tour in the first place.

Industry watchers claim postponements or cancellations of big-tickets shows is actually the result of poor ticket sales. It’s not known how many tickets had been sold for the May 29 concert, but there are thousands of seats still unsold for its July 8 re-do.

The shorthand for this is called, with no small amount of snark, blue dot fever, as reference to online seating charts which show buyers which seats are still available for purchase.

The more blue dots, the more seats are open.

Jelly Roll (Jason DeFord) has reportedly slimmed down considerably; maybe he’ll consider altering his stage name accordingly. He is an astonishingly good singer.

A new name for the headliner? Postpone Malone, maybe.

The big arrival in the visual art world is The Art of Banksy, a visiting exhibition opening July 31 in Morsani Hall, at the Straz Center in Tampa. It features more than 160 works by the anonymous British artist, including prints, canvases, screenprints, sculptures, unique works and limited-edition pieces.

On view through Aug. 30, the works are presented on the stage at Morsani, which will be transformed into an art gallery for the occasion.

More big summer shows at big summer venues: Train at the Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre (July 10); Ne-Yo and Akon at the Mid-Florida (July 14); Chicago and Styx at the Mid-Florida (July 15); Lynyrd Skynyrd and Loverboy at the Mid-Florida (July 18); Men at Work, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Shonen Knife at the BayCare Sound (July 18); Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire at Benchmark Arena (July 22); the Black Keys at the BayCare Sound (July 28).

St. Pete’s Palladium Theater will close Aug. 1 for long-awaited renovations – it’ll be at least a year – so the July 31 concert by local jazz artists Bryan J. Hughes & The Crew will be one to remember. It happens downstairs, in the Side Door Cabaret.
