Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb is putting his stamp of approval on a new piece of protective head gear for young pitchers.
Cobb draws a parallel between baseball and hockey when hockey players started wearing helmets.
"At the beginning just a few guys were wearing it, and then the older guys were grandfathered in with the rule that we're skating around with no helmets and everybody else is wearing helmets, and you thought those guys were crazy," Cobb said. "But hopefully down the road, we look back and we think there were some crazy pitchers out there going out there with no protective gear."
Cobb said the idea is to start players early in minor leagues so they grow up not thinking twice about it later.
The isoBLOX skull capwas released last month at Dick's Sporting Goods store. Cobb is one of about 60 pitchers in the major league trying updated products and reviewing them.
It's been almost a year since a line drive hit Cobb in the right ear and he suffered a concussion that put him out of the game for two months.
