Two eerily similar deadly pile-up's, years apart, are raising questions about how law enforcement responds to extreme fog and smoke - and why their procedures haven't been updated.
Thick smoke and fog blanketed the road the morning 11 were killed in a deadly pile-up on I-75 near Gainesville earlier this year.
It was almost the same situation drivers faced four years earlier in a deadly 70 car pile-up on Interstate 4 in Polk County that claimed four lives.
After the I-4 crashes, the highway patrol said it would amp up training and tweak procedures to deal with smoke and fog on Florida highways.
But, according to a Florida Department of Law enforcement report, released in April, the Florida Highway Patrol did little to improve its fog and smoke procedures.
And, the report says what changes were made were limited and the subsequent training ineffective.
So far, the state of Florida is facing 11 intents to sue over January's I-75 crashes.
