Mystery Surrounds Events That Left 3-Year-Old Boy Alone On Island

Google Maps

Mystery surrounds the circumstances that left a 3-year-old boy alone on an island in the middle of the Alafia River near Tampa following a Halloween afternoon outing with his father on a See-Doo water scooter.

Investigators tell local news outlets that the body of 38-year-old William "Billy" Morris was found Tuesday along the river's south bank in Gibsonton. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter told news outlets that Morris and little August left their canal-front home Monday afternoon. Morris told his wife they'd be back soon.

When they didn't return, she called his cellphone. August answered, crying. He was alone on the small island. Investigators found the water scooter nearby.

Investigators say August was in good health, but wasn't able to provide an account of what happened.
