Education received top billing when Senate President Don Gaetz and House Speaker Will Weatherford detailed a joint five-point agenda for the upcoming legislative session.
But a rewrite of gambling laws is unlikely this year. Gaetz says gambling isn't a priority despite part of the state's agreement with the Seminole Tribe ending in 2015.
Gaetz and Weatherford, both Republicans, followed President Barack Obama's State of the Union philosophy of combatting poverty through education with job opportunities coming from an adjusted education system.
The agenda aims to make the state more military-friendly, enact measures to protect vulnerable Floridians - children and seniors - from sexual offenders and other quality-of-life danger. It also supports Governor Rick Scott's $500 million tax cut and reforming the Florida Retirement System and improving ethics laws.
