A last-minute rally in support of Ron DeSantis, the Republican candidate for governor, was held today in Hillsborough County. And some familiar faces showed up.
Among those showing up at the GOP's Hillsborough Victory Office were U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Marco Rubio of Florida. It was part of a late push by Republicans to get out the vote for Ron DeSantis.
Graham said voters have a stark choice between a "principled conservative" - DeSantis - or Democrat Andrew Gillum, who he called a socialist whose policies resemble those of Venezuela.
"A lot of people left Venezuela to come to Florida. Do you understand why? Well, who wants to turn Florida into Venezuela? Nobody. That's what your choices are when it comes to governor," Graham said.
DeSantis took shots at his Democatic opponent, calling Gillum a "Failed Mayor" of Tallahassee who would impose his brand of socialism on the state. But DeSantis also noted the new governor would be able to appoint three State Supreme Court justices who are being term-limited out of office. DeSantis said he would appoint Constitutionalists, who would not "legislate from the bench."
"They will be in the mold of people like Clarence Thomas, on the U.S. Supreme Court. When I do that successfully, and I will, we will have ended judicial activism in Florida for a generation," DeSantis said. "That's a big deal."
DeSantis has been trailing Gillum in most polls.
