This week on Florida Matters we're taking another listen to our discussion about foster care in the region.

The number of children being removed from their homes and placed into foster care has increased dramatically over the past few years. And at the same time, overdose deaths from drugs like heroin and fentanyl have spiked, particularly in areas like Manatee and Sarasota Counties.

As Florida Matters' Stephanie Colombini reports in this preview, there's a connection there.

I cover health care for WUSF and the statewide journalism collaborative Health News Florida. I’m passionate about highlighting community efforts to improve the quality of care in our state and make it more accessible to all Floridians. I’m also committed to holding those in power accountable when they fail to prioritize the health needs of the people they serve.
