San Francisco's new main library has been called "the library of the 21st century". At a cost of $137 million dollars, it offers patrons the use of 300 computers, some services in over 50 languages, video conferencing, over 1 million books, and 228 "talking signs" for the blind. But some library administrators charge that the library foundation's fundraising strategy of targeting special interest groups for major donations may determine the way the library will serve the public.
