Writer Jeff Goodell grew up in the heart of California's Silicon Valley, in a sleepy town named Sunnyvale. Suddenly, the computer revolution took off, changing Sunnyvale from a community of orchards and tract homes, to one of start-ups and millionaires. At the same time the computer industry was skyrocketing, Jeff Goodell's parents got divorced, his father's landscaping business started to fail, and his brother developed a decades long substance abuse problem.
