African Leaders Fight to Get Heard at G8 Summit

Many believe issues pertaining to Iraq will overshadow concerns about Africa at the Group of Eight Summit meeting in coastal Georgia this week. But South African leader Thabo Mbeki and others say they plan to be heard anyway. NPR's Tavis Smiley talks to two guests who formerly served in high-level State Department positions: Chester Crocker, professor of strategic studies at Georgetown University and former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs during the Reagan Administration. Also joining the conversation is Susan Rice, senior fellow in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution and former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs during the Clinton administration.
