Longtime FloridianJoseph Gamble has a new exhibition at theFlorida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa. It's his largest exhibition ever, which encompasses a sort of retrospective of his entire body of work, and photographs he's taken at Cape Canaveral. Gamble, who has taught photography at The University of Tampa, now teaches atColorado Mountain College.
He said much of the photography in this exhibition is travel photography, and "When you visit a place that's new, a big mistake is to be reactive and to start snapping away, and...with luck you come away with something that is of merit and powerful. I think now I am a photographer that seeks and hunts a picture that is specific to me."
Gamble said it's taken many years to get to this place, but he's just now breaking into it, where he's seeing his way, "regardless of place, or location or subject."
In his words, "relationships that are established by geometry, and then, gesture and light, those are often the hallmarks of a successful photograph."
Gamble mentions Cartier Bresson and Alex Webb as influences.
Joseph Gamble's photographs are on display at theFlorida Museum of Photographic Arts in downtown Tampa until August 31st.
