Florida Matters Preview: Florida's Film Industry

This week on Florida Matters we're talking about how the state's film industry has fared since it ended a tax incentive program in 2016.

Experts say Florida has seen a decline in film and television production, often losing out to places that still offer state incentives like Georgia.

But the industry continues to survive, due in part to filmmakers passionate about Florida and counties that offer their own incentives.

In this preview, host Robin Sussingham talks about what's working for the state with Jimmy Geurts, who published a two-part series on the film industry this week for the Sarasota Herald Tribune, Tony Stopperan, a Sarasota-based filmmaker and Hillsborough County Film Commissioner Tyler Martinolich.

I cover health care for WUSF and the statewide journalism collaborative Health News Florida. I’m passionate about highlighting community efforts to improve the quality of care in our state and make it more accessible to all Floridians. I’m also committed to holding those in power accountable when they fail to prioritize the health needs of the people they serve.
