Activists Want Tampa To Become ‘Sanctuary City’

A few dozen activists delivered a letter to Tampa City Hall asking Mayor Bob Buckhorn to designate Tampa a "sanctuary city," a jurisdiction where local law enforcement doesn't cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

The Tampa Bay Times reports the activists delivered the letter Monday.

City spokeswoman Ashley Bauman said Mayor Buckhorn was in New York on a media tour promoting the city. Bauman said that the mayor was made aware of the request and will consider it. He returns to Tampa on Wednesday.

During a news conference, activists said they are concerned that President-elect Donald Trump has said he would deport some undocumented immigrants.
