Urban farmers, craft brewers, and sustainable living all come together for the “We Dig St. Pete” beer and garden tour on Saturday.
Attendees will learn how the community is promoting sustainable urban agriculture while enjoying local craft beer. The event will feature five craft brews and five edible gardens.
The tour is hosted by the Open Partnership Education Network, a group centered around community outreach and education solutions.
OPEN’s “Seeds” initiative aims to help the community learn how to grow healthy food and carry out their own sustainable practices.
Associate Director Jenny Fessler said they’re using a fun event to teach an important lesson about urban agriculture.
“Their desire is to reach out and find a broader audience and get more people engaged in growing food at home, learning how to eat their lawns and eating healthy and locally,” said Fessler.
OPEN is teaming with the Sustainable Urban Agriculture Coalition (SUAC) and the USF Saint Petersburg Brewing Arts Program for the event. SUAC has held self-guided tours for the past five years, but Fessler said the new partnership is taking things to another level.
The event will also give students from the Brewing Arts Program a chance to showcase their work at the end of the tour. Fessler said the combined work of USFSP and the local breweries makes for a stronger community.
“They all have a foothold in both the local beer culture and the sustainability culture,” said Fessler.
The first beer tasting kicks off at Cage Brewing at 1 p.m. with a guest speaker from the Fleet Farming project in Orlando. The tour will make its way around the city highlighting local gardens until it wraps up with a street party at Brick Street Farms.
The beer and garden tour will go from 1-7 p.m. and tickets are $10 per person. More information, including how to purchase tickets, can be found on the event page.
