Fact-Checking Governor Scott on Job Creation

politifact.com

"Jobs" has been Rick Scott's mantra since becoming governor of Florida.

Talk about any topic and Florida's governor is more than likely going to, somehow, end up talking about job creation.

And that certainly hasn't changed as Scott gears up his reelection campaign.

Most recently, the Governor has said Florida has created 540,000 jobs since 2010.

Are the governor's stats -- which came in an online ad -- correct?

"We rated that 'mostly true,'" said Josh Gillin of PolitiFact. "We looked at statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and found, in fact, there were 540,000 private sector jobs created in created in the state in that time frame."

So why, then, didn't PolitiFact give the governor's statement a true rating, instead of mostly true?

"We did knock him down a notch because he didn't actually say private jobs," Gillin explained. "We need to take into account the fact that in that same time period 23,000 government jobs are gone so we're talking a net increase of about 517,000. So, he got a mostly true for that."
