Betty Castor to Lead Fulbright Scholarship Board

USF

Former University of South Florida President Betty Castor has been elected chair of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

The Tampa Tribune reports Castor will supervise the State Department's international exchange program, which gives out around 1,700 Fulbright Scholarships a year.

“It’s kind of a combination of a lot of my interests in education and global affairs,” Castor said. “It’s interesting and exciting and I’m very, very pleased.”

While going to college, Castor taught secondary school in Uganda as part of the Teachers for East Africa program.

Castor was appointed to the board by President Barack Obama in 2011. She served a year as vice chair before being elected chair last month. She'll start the job January 1.

Castor served one term as a Hillsborough County Commissioner and three terms as a State Senator before being elected Florida Education Commissioner in 1987. She also served as President of USF from 1994 to 1999.
