Around 10:30 Monday morning, Gulf War veteran and former Army Ranger Alex Estrella, was 30 miles away from his quest that started May 21, 2015.
He created the "Run for Jamie" from Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base to Key West to honor Air Force Reserve Captain Jamie Brunette, who committed suicide in February 2015, and to raise awareness for suicide prevention and PTSD.
Estrella had planned to complete the 405-mile run in eight days. Now, 12 days in, a friend posting his progress on Facebook, Helen Dean, noted that he is within finishing distance.
Among the many hardships faced during the challenging trek, Estrella's chase car had to return to the Tampa Bay area. So, the non-profit service organization for veterans, Hope for the Warriors, stepped up and provided coverage while Estrella continued his personal quest.
WUSF will provide an update when Estrella completes the "Run for Jamie."
