Bollywood Fever Hits Downtown Tampa

Nathan Powell

One of the world's biggest award shows is coming to Tampa in April.

In advance of that, downtown was filled with music, food trucks and Bollywood dancing Friday.

It was all to increase awareness of the International Indian Film Awards, which are going to be presented in the United States for the first time next month.

Counsel General of India and IIFA supporter, Ajit Kumar, says Tampa has proved itself in the past as a host for major events and did so again Friday.

"The idea was to spread the word around that IIFA Weekend and Awards...are going to be held from April 23rd to 26th and 20,000 tickets have already been sold, but we want to make the common people in America aware that it's big Indian cinema which produces the largest number of movies in the world," Kumar said.

The IIFA will be held at Raymond James Stadium on April 26th. It's expected to draw a worldwide audience of over 800 million television viewers.
