St. Pete PD Chief Harmon to Retire, Foster: 'He's Just Tired'

St. Petersburg Police Department

After over 30 years with the Saint Petersburg Police Department, including the last 11 as Chief, Chuck Harmon announced his intention Wednesday to retire on January 6th, 2014, over a year earlier than expected. Mayor Bill Foster told the Tampa Bay Times that he was surprised by the announcement.

"This was his decision," Foster said. "He's tired. He's just tired. He's been contemplating this. This is not a forced departure."

Both Foster and Rick Kriseman, Foster's opponent in the November 5th general election, have indicated that they will consider a nationwide search for Harmon's replacement.
