U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan has won re-election for an eighth term representing parts of the greater Tampa Bay region.
The Republican defeated state legislator Margaret Good, a Democrat.
Good gave up her Florida House District 72 seat to run against Buchanan. It was a seat she won against his son James Buchanan in a February 2018 special election and again in November 2018.
The seat, which represents parts of northern Sarasota, flipped back to Republicans on Tuesday, with Navy veteran Fiona McFarland defeating her Democratic challenger, Drake Buckman.
"We. Did. It. Thank you," Fiona tweeted Tuesday night.
Buchanan, one of the wealthiest members of Congress, campaigned on his business acumen and support for lower taxes. Good campaigned on strengthening environmental safeguards and preserving the health care law put into effect by former President Barack Obama.
But in the end, Good could not overcome the fact that there are fewer Democratic voters in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
Good was fairly competitive in northern Sarasota and southern Hillsborough counties. But in Republican-rich Manatee County, she lost by 20 percent.
