Dennis Ross walked into his last election for Congress without an opposition. That won't be the case in next year's election. That's because a former television reporter today announced his candidacy for the seat now held by Ross.

Florida's 15th Congressional District used to be on the Atlantic Coast. Several rounds of redistricting have move what was once a Polk County seat westward into Hillsborough County. That's where the newest aspirant for that seat, former ABC Action News reporter Alan Cohn. lives. The New Tampa Democrat fashions himself as an alternative to Dennis Ross, a Lakeland Republican.

"People remember what I did in this area in terms of exposing political corruption and scams and frauds," he said. "What do we need in Congress? Do we need another multi-millionaire lawyer, or do we need someone who has been a crusading investigative reporter?"

Cohn announced his candidacy at the University of South Florida's Tampa campus, which is now part of the reconfigured district. He says the redistricting has drawn more Democrats such as himself into what was once a solidly Republican district.

Steve Newborn is a WUSF reporter and producer at WUSF covering environmental issues and politics in the Tampa Bay area.
