Fact-Checking the Governor on Environmental Licensing

politifact.com

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has taken his share of heat from environmentalists over his pro-business policies.

But lately the governor has proposed increases in spending on conservation projects -- including Everglades preservation and cleaner waterways.

Scott even praised Environmental Protection Agency workers.

The governor said, "Recently, Florida has successfully reduced the environmental permitting time down to just two days. That's great."

It is also untrue, according to Amy Hollyfield of "PolitiFact."

"We rated this claim false," said Hollyfield. "This is actually a case of the governor misspeaking. There is a license in Florida that you can get in two days. It's a professional license for a range of jobs, including auctioneers, hair braiders, geologists, realtors, veterinarians. But environmental permitting is still much longer than that."

Even some of Governor Scott's own staff didn't back their boss up right after he made that statement.

"The DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) Secretary Herschel Vinyard was like, actually it's more like 32-33 days," Hollyfield explained.
