Florida Matters Preview: Ethnic Newspapers In Tampa Bay

Stephanie Colombini/USF St. Petersburg

One of the area's leading newspapers, The Weekly Challenger in St. Petersburg, just celebrated its 50th anniversary. This week on Florida Matters we're talking about the history and cultural impact of Tampa Bay's ethnic publications.

In this preview, Florida Matters host Carson Cooper talks about how newspapers like The Weekly Challenger and Tampa's La Gaceta got their start with our guests:

  • Lyn Johnson, editor and publisher of The Weekly Challenger
  • Patrick Manteiga, editor and publisher of La Gaceta
  • Rodney Kite-Powell, Director of the Touchton Map Library and Saunders Foundation Curator of History at the Tampa Bay History Center

I cover health care for WUSF and the statewide journalism collaborative Health News Florida. I’m passionate about highlighting community efforts to improve the quality of care in our state and make it more accessible to all Floridians. I’m also committed to holding those in power accountable when they fail to prioritize the health needs of the people they serve.
Carson Cooper served as host of WUSF’s "Morning Edition" for 18 years. He took the job in 2000, after working in Tampa Bay radio for decades. He was a fan favorite of our listeners, bringing his friendly and familiar voice to listeners as they started their weekday mornings.
