The Florida Aquarium opened a new exhibit to patrons on Saturday: Journey to Madagascar.
The exhibit is home to ringed-tail lemurs, hissing cockroaches and an Indian Ocean coral reef aquarium with fish that can be found off the coast of the African island.
Although the permanent exhibit is meant to attract more visitors, aquarium spokesperson Katherine Claytor said the goal is to educate the public of Madagascar's overfishing problem. The decline in numbers of fish has led to people on the island to poach lemurs for their meat.
"While we're an aquarium, we're not limited to just fish and sharks and sea life," Claytor said. "Everything in the world has an impact, so impacts that are made to the ocean will actually impact some of the animals that live on land like the lemurs."
The Yob Family Foundation donated $100,000 to fund the exhibit, which replaced the Aquariumania Gallery.
