Rep. LaVon Bracy Davis defeated her brother, Randolph Bracy, and two others and will face Republican Willie Montague in the election to replace the late Geraldine Thompson for Senate District 15.

Adding to the family dynamics was the fact that the siblings' mother, civil rights activist Lavon Wright Bracy, endorsed her daughter over her son.

Both contests -- in Senate District 15 and House District 40 -- became vacant following the death in February of State Sen. Geraldine Thompson.

The Republican swing was interpreted as a sign of support among the region's Hispanic voters for Gov. Ron DeSantis and a lack of enthusiasm for his Democratic challenger, Rep. Charlie Crist.
