Brian Nathan won a special election Tuesday for Senate District 14 in Hillsborough County against Republican state Rep. Josie Tomkow. The margin of victory was so thin that an automatic recount could be called on Friday.

Dr. Ralph Massullo won by 18 points in a district that includes Citrus, Hernando, Sumter and a portion of Pasco. The position opened in July, when Blaise Ingoglia was appointed state CFO.

Both contests -- in Senate District 15 and House District 40 -- became vacant following the death in February of State Sen. Geraldine Thompson.

Only registered voters who live District 5 are eligible to vote in the Sept. 5 election. Henderson, who died last week at age 60, was elected in 2023.

He made those remarks while on the ground campaigning for Josh Weil, the Democratic candidate in Florida's 6th Congressional District running against Republican State Senator Randy Fine.
