Ranchers and agricultural experts say an influx of cheaper imports could depress cattle prices, discourage producers from rebuilding their herds and drive more ranchers out of the industry — potentially weakening the domestic beef supply without providing much relief for consumers.

Trade groups representing Florida ranchers have come out against President Donald Trump's plan to allow tariff-free beef imports over the next 90 days.

The bill would provide coverage to Florida Farm Bureau members that would not be subject to the same state and federal regulations as health insurance.

The legislation would clear the way for "medical benefit plans" that would not be subject to the same state and federal regulations as insurance. The House will soon vote on a version of the bill.

Ranchers in two southwest Florida counties are eligible for federal funding to protect panthers.
